Old-School Dungeons

This Add-On supports the creation of “old school” style dungeon maps, like the ones that came in old adventure modules (sometimes in black, but more commonly in non-repro blue). The art style is simple and classic, and is more appealing to a sense of nostalgia than to the eyes. The art is provided in black, but can be re-colored with filter effects in MapForge should a different color be desired (e.g. non-repro blue).

The art in this Add-On is intended to supplement the art included in MapForge that provides basic Donjon support, but adds the missing bits to allow for a more finished product. The Add-On adds 13 additional masks to the Build Tool, to account for new features such as double doors, arrow slits, illusory walls, etc. This is the first MapForge Add-On to include the Mask media type.

It also provides various pre-rendered sets of letters and numbers, in a variety of fonts, to allow GM to label their maps. The fonts have been selected to provide something suitable regardless of the map’s genre (fantasy, sci-fi, modern day, etc.). Until MapForge implements a dynamic text label tool, this can provide a labeling solution, even for photo-realistic maps created with other Add-Ons.

This Add-On is ideal for GMs who prefer more of a theater-of-the-mind approach to their maps. Some gamers are averse to the nearly photo-realistic style depicted by all other MapForge Add-Ons, as it makes them feel like their maps need to depict every little detail. This style, on the other hand, is far more open to interpretation and using one’s imagination to fill in whatever is missing.

While the Add-On is best for fantasy/medieval settings, many of its contents will be equally suitable for use in other genres. This Add-On should prove quite useful even for GMs using MapForge without a license.

Note that this Add-On requires MapForge v1.1.4 or greater.
